OVERCROWDED PRISONS

These figures are those we are aware of in these prisons

Bamenda Central Prison was built for 500 inmates. It now has between 1500 and 2000 inmates

The Yaounde central prison was constructed in 1968 for 1000 inmates.
Today, it has more than 4000

The central prison in Buea,
was built for 700 people, but currently holds over 2,000 – with the majority in pretrial detention.

Douala was built to host 800 inmates but today, it counts more than 4000 A quote from the Cameroon tribune of 2006 reads
“The Douala Central prison (New Bell Prison) is no doubt facing problems similar to that of other prisons in Cameroon. One problem stands out clear, that of over population. It was built several years back estimated to cater for 700 inmates but presently, it takes about 3466 inmates”.(Cameroon Tribune (2006)

With the Anglophone Crisis that started in 2016 there has been a massive increase in the numbers of the inmates in these prisons due to the rampant arbitrary arrest and detention without trial for years.
